Hands-On Courses to Build New Skills at Edinburgh Open Workshop

New year, new skills. Edinburgh Open Workshop (EOW) is kicking off January with a hands-on programme of creative courses designed to help people turn resolutions into reality – whether that means learning to weld, mastering the basics of woodworking, or breathing new life into old furniture.

Edinburgh Open Workshop, the capital’s award-winning community hub for makers, creatives and DIY enthusiasts, offers a wide range of practical workshops in woodworking, DIY, welding and textiles throughout the year. Designed for complete beginners as well as more experienced makers, the courses provide a rewarding way to build confidence, learn something new and start 2026 with a sense of achievement.

All classes are led by professional makers, many of whom are resident or PAYG members of EOW’s vibrant creative community, giving participants the chance to learn directly from people actively working in their craft.

Available classes starting this January and February include:

  • Upcycling Furniture – transform pre-loved pieces into something functional and uniquely yours
  • Weld Your Own Project – develop core welding techniques while creating a custom metal piece of your choice
  • Basics of Woodworking – an accessible introduction to woodworking, resulting in a handcrafted charcuterie board to take home
  • Handcraft a Shaker Design Drying Stand – learn basic furniture design, tool and machine use as your create your own elegant drying stand
  • Make Your Own Multifunctional Table – take your first steps in furniture design and construction and create a versatile indoor/outdoor table

“January is a great time to try something hands-on and fulfilling,” said Jessi James, Development Manager at Edinburgh Open Workshop. “So many people start the year wanting to learn a new skill or work more creatively, and our courses are designed to make that first step welcoming and achievable. Whether you want to make something for your home, learn practical DIY skills, or finally try welding or woodworking, there’s something here to help you stick to your resolution.”

EOW’s workshops, which range from short introductory sessions to multi-day and weekly classes, offer participants the opportunity to learn new techniques, gain experience using professional tools, and connect with a supportive creative community in an inclusive and friendly environment.
