Introduction to Metal Fabrication

In this course, participants will learn how to start working with, or develop their skills in metal. Through the course participants will learn:

  • Ways of cutting, hand forming, bending and manipulating thin gauge steel
  • Plasma cutting and using an angle grinder to create surface finishes
  • MIG welding including various types of joints, weld preparation and scenarios that can be applied to a personal project with mild steel.

These will be learnt in a hands-on way and through making your own small sculptural object, decorative panel or usable item.  Materials available include 6-10mm round bar, flat bar and 1mm steel sheet.

Course materials and PPE will be provided and a full induction to the workshop will take place at the beginning of the course.  Additional material will be available for purchase if required.

No previous welding or metal work experience is required. The course aims to support participants to learn new skills and develop their creative possibilities for fabrication in metal work.
